Exercise

Root Ports

Explain the succession of events:

  1. SW2 becomes the root as it is the one with the lowest priority. Because of this, all its ports are designated ports.

  2. SW1 and SW4 are both directly connected to SW2, via G0/0 and G0/1 respectively, so these ports become root ports.

  3. For SW3, the cost (gigabit connections) is the same for both connections so it looks for the neighbor with the lowest bridge ID. This is SW1 because, although the priorities between SW1 and SW4 are the same, SW1's MAC address is lower.

Identity Port Root

The neighbor switch's port ID is used to break the tie, not the local switch's port ID.
