Second-level blockchain protocols

Blockchain networks have their limitations:

  • Throughput

  • Transaction speed

  • Capacity

  • Scalability

Second-level (or second-layer) protocols are built on top of blockchains to provide solutions to these issues

State channels (like Bitcoin's Lightning Network) are the most well-known type of second-level blockchain protocol
