Allows for

• Confidentiality among the key holders.

• Limited authentication of messages.

• When block ciphers are used.

Advantages

Performance (usually very efficient).

Disadvantages

N interacting peers, pairwise secrecy -> N * (N-1)/2 keys.

Problems

Key distribution.
